No Board Exams for CBSE Class X students

There will be no common Board exams for CBSE Class X students from the next academic year (2012-13). Students will have to take only school-based exams. Students were given the option of school-based exams or Board exams last year (2010-11).However, school-based exams will completely replace board exams from 2012-13.

As part of the continuous and comprehensive evaluation (CCE) introduced by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), the Board exam for Class X was made optional in 2010-11. This was done to ease the pressure that Board exams put on students. But, surprisingly, very few students opted for the school-based exams held in March 2011. Over 90 per cent of students in the State opted to appear forBoard exams. This was largely because there were apprehensions among students and parents about the credibility of school-conducted exams compared to those conducted by the board.Out of the nearly 20,000 students registered for Class X exams from the state for March 2011, around 19,200 opted for board exams and only 800 students registered for the school-conducted internal exams. At the national level too the response was poor. Out of 9 lakh Class X students, nearly 6 lakh opted for Board exams. This year, more students have opted for school-based exams that will be held in March 2012. In AP, about 40 per cent of students will do likewise.“The first batch of Class X students who appeared for school-based exams in March 2011 will complete Class XII in March 2012,”said a senior CBSE official.

Britain has released a list of almost 2,000 banking institutions in India whose financial statements will not considered valid for the purpose of issuing students visas

Britain has released a list of almost 2,000 banking institutions in India whose financial statements will not considered valid for the purpose of issuing students visas.“The UK Border Agency maintains a list of financial institutions from which we will not accept financial statements submitted in support of applications under Tier 4 of the points based system,” the home office said.

The 1,940 banks, which include cooperative and rural ones, will not be considered for purpose of granting students’ visas from November 24, the home office said. The list has been subdivided into cooperative banks: scheduled urban cooperative banks, cooperative banks: non-scheduled urban cooperative banks and rural banks.“We will use the list when verifying maintenance funds under Tier 4 of the points-based system.“An applicant will receive no points for maintenance if they submit documents showing that the funds are held in a financial institution on the list,” the home office warned. It said these financial institutions do not satisfactorily verify financial statements submitted by the student visa applicants. “When a bank frequently provides unsatisfactory responses to verification requests, it is proportionate to include it on a list from which we will not accept documents, rather than verifying applications individually,” the home office added.

To help potential students from India, the home office also has issued a list of 85 banks, whose financial statements will be accepted by the UK Border Agency for the purpose of issuing students’ visas. New format for CAT this year

With the CAT exams undergoing a format change this year, MBA aspirants are anxious, to say the least. But experts say starting out with the right section and scanning the questions before attempting the paper could help you crack it.

The Common Admission Test (CAT) — the gateway to pursuing MBA from the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) among other prestigious institutions — will be held from October 22 to November 18 this year. Nearly 2,05,000 students have registered this time against the 3,000 IIM seats. This marginally exceeds last year’s registrations of 2,04,000.

In the new exam pattern, the CAT paper will have only two sections instead of three. Till last year, the paper was divided into Quantitative Ability, Verbal Ability, and Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning. From this year, the first section will focus on Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation and the second on Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning. These two sections will now have to be tackled sequentially with separate time limits unlike earlier when students could divide their time between the sections as per their priority.

There are different sections; one student may be strong in Quantitative Ability and weak in Verbal Ability. Till last time, he had the liberty to decide which section he wanted to spend more time on, says Ulhas Vairagkar, director of T.I.M.E.

The total time for the exam has been increased from 135 minutes to 140 minutes, and 70 minutes each have been fixed for the two sections. Now you have to be good at both the sections. Even if you are good at one section and complete it before time, you cannot carry it forward. That is one thing which can have an impact on a student’s performance, Mr Vairagkar said. According to Mr Vairagkar, time management will be the most important factor for students this time. This year, the maximum number of candidates scheduled to take the exam are from New Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Pune.

No CET for PG Medical Students

Its official now: the Common Entrance Test (CET) for post-graduate medical students will not start from this session. In a meeting on Tuesday, the Union health ministry decided that it would not be “feasible” to conduct the CET for post-graduate medical students from 2012 and decided to go ahead with the CET for under-graduates only from this year. Earlier, the government had decided to conduct the CET for both undergraduates and post graduate medical students from this session (2012).

The All India CET for PG got into limbo with the Medical Council of India (MCI) yet to convince an agency to conduct the exam for them. Earlier, the MCI had approached the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for holding the exam which expressed its inability due to lack of manpower.

Now NEET, not Eamcet for medical admissions

Students of BiPC (Biology, Physics and Chemistry) in the state will now have to switch over to CBSE syllabus with the NTR University of Health Sciences announcing on September 25 that the state will participate in the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) for admissions to MBBS, scheduled to be held in 2012.
Students rue the fact that they would have to unlearn some lessons from the state syllabus. Officials of NTR Health University had announced on Sunday that the state will not conduct Eamcet for the medical stream from the coming academic year.

The state’s decision to participate in NEET came at a time when Telugu medium students sought to know the stand of the Medical Council of India (MCI) on providing question papers in regional languages. While over 15,000 to 20,000 students from the state write Eamcet medical stream in Telugu, it is not clear whether the national authorities will conduct NEET in regional languages. Another issue is the schedule of the national test.

MCI has also decided that AIIMS and JIPMER will be held along with NEET. “MCI has decided not to conduct AFMC, meant for admissions to armed forces medical colleges. We are not sure whether NEET is enough for admissions to AF colleges,” said a senior lecturer.

Students in the state are worried that their preparation which is mainly for Eamcet will not be enough to get through the national level test. “Most students from AP aim at getting a seat in medical colleges within the state and bank mostly on Eamcet. Since MCI has not specified the syllabus for NEET so far we are worried that students who have been writing the national level entrance tests will score more than us who have studied for Eamcet,” said S Anuradha, a second year student from a corporate college in the city.

74,688 Engineering Seats in Convener-Quota Remain vacant

After the successive rounds of EAMCET counselling, 74,688 engineering seats have remained vacant under the convener’s quota across the state. While big engineering colleges have managed to fill up the existing seats in various streams, colleges established in the last five years are the worst-hit. A similar number of seats under the management quota have found no takers.

The date set for completion of the admission procedure is October 24 and students opting for the management quota have to do so before October 15. Given the short time span, private engineering college managements are in a fix.

“The deadline is short and whatever planning we do has to be for the next year,” said KVK Rao, general secretary of the Consortium of Engineering and Professional College Management Associations.

Due to the ongoing strike, some students missed the deadline of September 25 and could not report on time for fresh allotments in the final phase of counselling.

“The rules do not permit the students to exercise their options after the deadline has passed.

Unfortunately, these students will have to continue in the colleges allotted previously,” added Rao.The seats can not be filled by the college managements. Nearly 15,028 fresh allotments were made in the second phase of counselling, which concluded on September 10.

While electronics and communication engineering (ECE) seemed to be the most favoured branch, computer science, and electrical and electronics have lost favour of the aspirants.

As the AICTE lists the course of action over 2012-13, a fresh crop of private engineering colleges is likely to come up in the state, adding to the dismal situation.

“We would request AICTE within a week’s time to refrain from approving the establishment of new engineering colleges as it will compound our woes,” said Rao.As of now, about half of the 3.1 lakh engineering seats in the state are vacant.

Australia eases norms for student visas

Australia has introduced easier norms for international students, said to be this country’s third biggest export industry after coal and iron ore but under pressure after the attacks on Indian students and emergence of competitors.

Under the new arrangements announced on Thursday, international students enrolled in at or higher bachelor degree courses will be treated as lower risk applicants leading to less onerous financial and documentary requirements.

Students undertaking vocational courses would continue to be assessed against higher assessment levels but with lower financial requirements.

The changes will also allow for a two to four year post-study work visa for university graduates depending on the level of study completed.

These changes will be progressively implemented from late 2011 with the full complement of changes expected to be finalised in the first half of 2012.

CAT next year to see changes

CAT set to turn less stressful IIM aspirants will have to appear for only two sections instead of three, with an additional five minutes that will help them appear for the exam in a more relaxed environment
With only 40 days remaining for the Common Aptitude Test (CAT) 2011, the organisers have announced some changes in the format of the exams.

According to the organisers, unlike the previous editions of the exam, aspirants wanting to get into one of the 13 Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) colleges, will have to appear for only two sections instead of three, with an additional five minutes that will help them appear for the exam in a more relaxed environment.

Throwing light on the new format, an IIM official revealed that out of the two sections, the first would aim at testing the quantitative and data interpretation ability of the students, while the second section would deal with testing the verbal and logical reasoning skills of the students.

The two sections will have 60 questions each, and will have to be attempted in a duration of 70 minutes each. “The stress is more on testing the students' capacity to do mental calculations, which will be done in the first section that will have mathematical problems based on algebra, number systems and arithmetic.

The second section will test the analysing and logical prowess of students. It will not be merely testing of the students' memory, but also an understanding of the language being used in the questions, their interpretation and usage,“ said the official.

The IIMs have also announced a new scoring system in which students having up to four years work experience, will score up to 80.

MBA common admission test from 2012-13

In a move that will cut down the multiple entrance exams that students are forced to take for admission to management courses across the country, the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has decided to conduct a common admission test from 2012-13. The test will cover admissions to both MBA and postgraduate diploma in management.

The decision to hold a pan-India Common Management Admission Test (CMAT) was taken at the recent executive council meeting of the AICTE, the umbrella body for professional courses. While CMAT will be one of the entrance exams to be held in 2012, the Council wants all its colleges and institutes to admit students based on their CMAT scores from 2013.

"Almost every college was holding an entrance exam. Moreover, each state has its own entrance tests, and private associations have their own exams," AICTE chairman S S Mantha said. "In principle, CMAT will be a test for all AICTE-approved institutes and will reduce the stress and financial burden on students."

However, the Indian Institutes of Management, which are independent and autonomous B-schools, will continue to conduct the CAT (common admission test). Deemed universities will also hold their individual entrance tests. But admission to 4,000 colleges that offer an MBA and another 500 which run diploma programmes will take place on the basis of the CMAT.

"We still have to work out the modalities of conducting the CMAT. But having so many exams, all of varied difficulty levels, also raises concerns about the quality of students who enter this professional course," Mantha added. It is for the first time that the AICTE has spoken about holding an entrance exam; to date, it has largely been an approval-seeking body for new colleges and institutes wanting to expand student intake.

The Management Aptitude Test, which is taken by 3.85 lakh students every year, is currently the largest B-school entrance test. Hari Krishna Maram, governing council member of AIMA which conducts MAT, said "I welcome the idea of a single entrance exam for management courses in the interest of students. The government has been talking about it for quite sometime, but the idea hasn`t taken off. I do not know if a single exam will work since different universities have different admission schedules. MAT, on the other hand, is conducted four times a year and this helps students to take the exam whenever they are free."

AIEEE goes online in 2012

Pattern change Since many students were forced to take the exam twice on account of a question paper leak last year, the CBSE has decided to go online in 2012.

The All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE) will go completely online from this year, just like the Common Admission Test (CAT) for IIMs.

The CBSE, which conducts the national exam every year, decided to to go ahead with the move on account of the leak of a question paper last year which forced several students to take the exam again.

The next AIEEE is scheduled to be held nationwide on April 29, 2012.

Last year, a majority of the students opted for the conventional exam since the option was allowed. The plan was to conduct online exams for one lakh students out of the 11.5 lakh applicants, but less than 5,000 students opted for the online exam. In Andhra Pradesh, of the 1.5 lakh applicants, less than 100 opted for the online exam last year.

This year, the CBSE has decided not to give students the option.

“This year, the CBSE is planning to conduct online exams on a mass scale. Students are advised to acquaint themselves with the new method,“ a CBSE circular stated. An competent agency will be employed to ensure smooth conduct of the test.

About 28,000 B.Tech seats and 1,000 B. Arch seats are filled annually through the AIEEE.

D.Ed is the most popular course this year

It's not engineering or management, but the Diploma in Education (D.Ed) course that has emerged as the most popular course in state this year.

While students earlier would not pay even `20,000 for a management quota seat in a D.Ed course, the seats are now going for up to `1.5 lakh per annum for the twoyear course.

The decision of the government to reserve 30 per cent of the Secondary Grade Teacher (SGT) posts in government schools for D.Ed students in all its future recruitments is said to be the reason for the spurt in demand.

The Right to Education Act also mandates the governments to appoint candidates with D.Ed to teach students of primary classes.

Both these factors have contributed to the huge demand for D.Ed. seats courses.

EAMCET Rank Calculation Algorithm

After the announcement of EAMCET marks students are curious to evaluate their score after considering the 25 per cent weightage given to Intermediate marks.

Though some students have appeared for the advanced supplementary examination other students know both the EAMCET and Intermediate marks and they can calculate the marks that will decide the EAMCET rank.
According to the system devised for the weightage issue, marks secured in three subjects in EAMCET will be calculated for 75 per cent and they will be added to the 25 per cent equivalent of the marks scored in the core subjects: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry in case of MPC students and Physics, Chemistry, Zoology and Botany in case of BiPC students.

For example, if a student scores 140 marks out of 160 (total marks) in EAMCET, his marks will be arrived at dividing 140 with 160 and then multiplying the result with 75 (allotted weightage) to get the marks.
Here it will come to 65.625 marks.

AIEEE! Leak of question paper delays examination

HYDERABAD: The All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) question paper was leaked on Saturday night in Uttar Pradesh, following which the exam was delayed by three hours on Sunday.

The Special Task Force in Uttar Pradesh arrested one person in connection with the leak and is looking for further leads. “We are trying to trace two people who leaked the paper. We have the paper with us since Saturday night. It was being sold for `6 lakh,“ said Mr Vijay Prakash of STF.

While officials of the Central Board of Secondary Education, which conducts AIEEE, claimed that the question paper leak had been traced to Bihar and Kanpur till now, some city students, parents and coaching centres claimed that they had been receiving anonymous calls since Saturday offering to sell AIEEE question papers for ` 10 lakh to `40 lakh.

Some students and parents demanded the government to inquire into the issue to ascertain the facts while pointing out that two major rackets involving question paper leaks were busted in the city since June last year. claims trace Though CBSE claimed that the question paper leak had been traced to Bihar and Kanpur till now, city students claimed they had received calls offer ing to sell AIEEE ques tion papers. Students and par ents demanded the government to inquire into the issue to ascertain the facts.

In June last year, the city unit of the Central Bureau of Investigation had busted a major racket regarding leaking the Railways Recruitment Board question paper. The CBI had arrested Vivek Bharadwaj, son of Mumbai Railway Recruitment Board chairman, S.M. Sharma and seized lakhs of rupees of cash from them.

A large number of students appear for the AIEEE exam from Hyderabad. It stands next only to Delhi in the country. While nearly 60,000 students appeared from Delhi for AIEEE this year, about 45,000 were from Hyderabad.

“Going by the huge response for AIEEE from students of Hyderabad, there are chances that scamsters might eye the city to supply the leaked papers.

The issue has to be thoroughly investigated. We will request the state government to order the police department or any investigating agency to inquire into the complaints of AIEEE paper leaks in the city,” said a senior official of the higher education department.

SSC certificates to have mom's name

HYDERABAD : Almost all the 13 lakh students have opted to have the names of both father and mother on the SSC certificates." D. Sambasiva Rao SSC principal secretary.

The SSC Board April 17: The SSC Board will issue new marks certificates to students from this year that will have their mother’s name along with the father’s name.

“All the schools were directed to issue an application form to SSC students to provide their parent’s names to be printed on the SSC certificate. The students and their parents were given the choice to choose the name of either father or mother or both. However, almost all the 13 lakh students have opted to have the names of both father and mother,” said Mr D. Sambasiva Rao, principal secretary, secondary education.

At present, only the name of father or guardian is printed on SSC certificates.

There has been a consistent demand from various women’s organisations to include the mother’s name too because of the ordeal faced by “single mothers” who do not want to name the father of the child. Officials of most of the schools insist on only the father’s name on the certificates.

The government is now planning to extend the option to include both parents’ names to Intermediate certificates from next year.

In the last one year, the government received about 500 applications from “single mothers” requesting that rules be amended to allow their names to be mentioned as parent.

Websites to display marks for Intermediate results

The Board of Intermediate Education will allow Intermediate students who appeared for public exams in March this year to know their marks subject-wise. It has decided to post the marks on all websites that provide Intermediate results expected to be announced between April 20 and 25.

Nearly 70 websites provide Intermediate results every year. Till now, students knew about their marks only through BSNL IVRS (Interactive Voice Response Systems). All the websites simply displayed grades. Even the results CDs released to the media by the Inter board only contained grades.

It became a tough task for students to know the marks since BSNL failed to cope up with the huge demand from lakhs of students.

Meanwhile, the Inter board is contemplating to provide marks even on mobile phones.

Eamcet exam likely to be postponed

Eamcet-2011 scheduled to be held on May 8 across the state will be postponed following the decision of the Election Commission on Wednesday to conduct polling for the Kadapa Lok Sabha and Pulivendula Assembly constituencies on the same day.

JNTU-Hyderabad, which is conducting Eamcet, is expected to make a formal announcement on Thursday. “We will meet on Thursday to discuss the issue and take a final decision on postponement,” said Prof D.N. Reddy, chairman, Eamcet.

The Eamcet schedule was announced in December last year, after taking into consideration the schedule announced for nationallevel competitive exams like IITJEE, AIEEE, AFMC, JIPMER etc. To change it now, and ensure that its does not clash with the other exams, will be a tough call.
The Eamcet exams were scheduled for a Sunday so that candidates don't have to battle weekday traffic and will be on time for the exam. The next Sunday following May 8 has been taken by the ICET, so the Eamcet will likely be held on a weekday, probably May 9 or 11.

A day of horror for Inter students

Hyderabad: The promised buses for students appearing for Intermediate examinations never showed up on Thursday. Students were left to fend for themselves though Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) officials had grandly announced two weeks ago that special buses would ply to ferry them to and fro their examination centres.

BIE officials had announced that 185 APSRTC buses would ply on Thursday to ferry students to their exam centres. Students complained that they were forced to travel for over two hours in peak traffic to reach their exam centres. “The police did not allow us to enter the restricted areas near Necklace Road even after we showed them our hall tickets. We reached the exam hall 15 minutes late and were worried that we wouldn’t be able to answer all the questions,” said a student at Mahbubia College.

It was a forgettable experience for students of 32 exam venues located in the restricted area as they were kept waiting at police barricades at Punjagutta and Khairatabad. “Four students who came along with their parents were reportedly forced to wait for an hour at Khairatabad as police officials prevented them from passing through the area,” BIE sources said. The parents later lodged a complaint with BIE officials on the incident.

Many parents were seen waiting for their wards to finish their exam to take them back home lest they would be stranded again on the way home. “Some parents even arranged cabs to take students back home from the exam centres,” said N Ratnakar, regional inspection officer (RIO), Ranga Reddy. Some students who were stranded at Secretariat due to a traffic jam were taken to their examination centres by the RIO, Hyderabad.

BIE officials said that the ‘Million March’ did not affect the turnout of students in Ranga Reddy and Hyderabad. “Only 2.34 percent of the 77,000 students in RR district did not turn up for the exam. In Hyderabad, 3.3 per cent students were absent,” said G Balaramaiah, secretary, BIE.

The English Paper II was held as scheduled across the state on Thursday. The BIE officials in a press release said that two impersonation cases were reported in Ranga Reddy and Warangal on Thursday.

The officials also said that flying sqauds shut down photostat centres in Viziayanagaram district as news about a question paper leak was reported. Meanwhile, CBSE and ICSE schools arranged transport for students in view of the protest call.
