SSC certificates to have mom's name

HYDERABAD : Almost all the 13 lakh students have opted to have the names of both father and mother on the SSC certificates." D. Sambasiva Rao SSC principal secretary.

The SSC Board April 17: The SSC Board will issue new marks certificates to students from this year that will have their mother’s name along with the father’s name.

“All the schools were directed to issue an application form to SSC students to provide their parent’s names to be printed on the SSC certificate. The students and their parents were given the choice to choose the name of either father or mother or both. However, almost all the 13 lakh students have opted to have the names of both father and mother,” said Mr D. Sambasiva Rao, principal secretary, secondary education.

At present, only the name of father or guardian is printed on SSC certificates.

There has been a consistent demand from various women’s organisations to include the mother’s name too because of the ordeal faced by “single mothers” who do not want to name the father of the child. Officials of most of the schools insist on only the father’s name on the certificates.

The government is now planning to extend the option to include both parents’ names to Intermediate certificates from next year.

In the last one year, the government received about 500 applications from “single mothers” requesting that rules be amended to allow their names to be mentioned as parent.
